The Hans Fallada Foundation

The foundation deed establishing the “Hans Fallada Foundation” was legally approved on 6 April 2000. The City of Neubrandenburg, represented by its Lord Mayor, established the foundation as a legal entity under civil law, endowed with cash assets of DM 600,000 and based in Neubrandenburg. Additional endowments are welcome at any time.

The Foundation is subject to the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The charitable purpose set out in section 2 of the Foundation’s statutes is worded as follows:

“The purpose of the Foundation is to preserve Hans Fallada’s legacy in the broadest sense over the long term and to keep it alive. In accordance with section 58 no. 1 of the German Fiscal Code, the Foundation supports in particular the preservation and expansion of existing collections relating to the life and work of Hans Fallada, as well as academic research into his literary work, thereby contributing to the promotion of culture.”

The City of Neubrandenburg appointed the Foundation’s first Board of Trustees and its first Executive Board. The appointed members met on 21 July 2000 for the constituent meeting in the new barn hall on the Hans Fallada estate in Carwitz. They approved guidelines for fulfilling the Foundation’s purpose, the Executive Board’s rules of procedure and the first budget.

Responsibility for fulfilling the Foundation’s purpose was entrusted to Literaturzentrum Neubrandenburg e. V., which has built up and successfully managed the Hans Fallada Archives over more than thirty years of work.

The Hans Fallada Archives are located on the estate in Carwitz. Since its establishment, the Foundation has supported the maintenance and expansion of the Archives and has funded acquisitions, events, academic conferences and publications. It also encourages gifts to complete the collections and seeks additional endowments.

In accordance with the statutes, the Executive Board is elected every three years and the Board of Trustees every five years. The members of both bodies serve in an honorary capacity and as private individuals, with all the resulting legal consequences for the Foundation.
